Joel M. Denaro is a Miami-based criminal defense trial attorney with more than twenty-five years of experience representing clients in state and federal courts throughout South Florida and the country, including the Southern District of New York, the Eastern District of New York, and Washington, D.C. Born and raised in Miami, he attended Miami Palmetto High School and trained at the Miami-Dade Public Defender's Office for more than six and a half years as an active trial lawyer. During that time, he tried more than 40 jury trials to verdict, ranging from DUI and felony cases to a murder trial in which he secured an acquittal, as well as a death penalty case in which the jury returned a life recommendation. In 2004, he opened his own practice, Joel Denaro, P.A.
His practice spans the full spectrum of criminal defense, including DUI and drug-related charges, serious felony offenses, white-collar fraud, federal investigations, and RICO matters. His work regularly involves money laundering, international money laundering, narcotics offenses, OFAC violations, and Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) matters, often with cross-border exposure spanning Latin America and extradition proceedings. He guides clients through every stage of the process, from investigation and pretrial strategy through negotiation and trial, including jury trials in federal and state courts. While in private practice in the Eastern District of New York, he represented the leader of a money laundering organization in what was, at the time, the largest money laundering case in the country, involving $1.8 billion, before Judge Sterling Johnson; the client received no jail sentence. He also represented the leader of a drug trafficking organization in the largest drug case in the Eastern District of New York, involving 880,000 kilograms, in which the client received a sentence of five and a half years. In numerous other large international matters, his clients avoided criminal charges altogether.
