Joel M. Denaro

Joel M. Denaro is a Miami criminal defense trial lawyer with more than 25 years of experience in state and federal courts across the United States. His federal practice is rooted in the Southern District of Florida. He has worked extensively in the Eastern District of New York and has also handled matters in California, the Southern District of New York, and Washington, D.C.

Denaro was born and raised in Miami and graduated from Miami Palmetto High School in 1989. He began his career at the Miami-Dade Public Defender's Office, where he spent more than six and a half years as a trial lawyer.

At the Public Defender's Office, trials were the currency. The work was not about money. It was about experience. Denaro was constantly in court and took depositions almost every day. He learned to think on his feet. That experience became invaluable later as his practice and clientele changed.

During those years, Denaro tried more than 40 jury cases to verdict. At one point, he obtained 19 consecutive not-guilty verdicts. His cases ranged from DUI and serious felony prosecutions to murder and the death penalty. He secured an acquittal in a murder case.

At 32, Denaro qualified to serve as first-chair counsel in death penalty cases. At the time, he was the youngest lawyer in Miami to meet the requirements. He also tried a high-profile death penalty case that was later reversed on appeal based on an issue he preserved at trial.

In 2004, Denaro opened his firm, Joel Denaro, P.A. His practice now spans serious state and federal criminal matters, including federal investigations, white-collar fraud, RICO, money laundering, international narcotics cases, OFAC violations, and Foreign Corrupt Practices Act matters. Many of his cases involve Latin America, extradition, and other cross-border issues.

Serious matters demand serious preparation. Denaro's work often begins before charges are filed, and he prepares every matter with the expectation that it may have to be tried.

Denaro's federal work includes major international narcotics and money laundering prosecutions. In the Southern District of Florida, he tried one of the largest narcotics cases in the district's history. The jury deadlocked 7-5 in favor of acquittal.

In the Eastern District of New York, Denaro represented the leader of a $1.8 billion money laundering organization in what was then the largest case of its kind in the country. His client received no jail time. In another matter, he represented a leader of the organization known as the "Super Cartel" in what was then the district's largest narcotics prosecution. The case involved approximately 880,000 kilograms of narcotics. His client was sentenced to five and a half years.

Not all important results are public. In other matters, Denaro's clients have avoided criminal charges entirely.

Complex cases often require a broader team. Denaro works with lawyers, investigators, former federal law enforcement officers, and specialists, many of whom he has worked with for years.

Denaro has been a member of The Florida Bar since 1999. He is a graduate of New York Law School. He was first included in The Best Lawyers in America in 2008 and has been included every year since.

Most of Denaro's cases come through referrals from former clients and other lawyers. His practice is selective by design. He accepts a limited number of matters so that every client receives his direct attention.
